When a Republican Congressman from Texas started scaremongering about Obamacare during a hearing this morning held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, a Democrat from New Jersey stood his ground, refused to “yield”, and blasted him and his GOP colleagues for spreading lies and distortions about Pres. Obama’s signature health care reform.
As Texas Republican Joe Barton was in the middle of lying about Obamacare’s privacy protections (and whether they conflict with HIPAA, a law that ensures the privacy of health information), this brave Democrat, Representative from New Jersey Frank Pallone, stepped in and put Barton in his place.
“HIPAA only applies when there is health information is being provided, that is not in play here today. No health information is required in the application process, and why is that? Because preexisting conditions don’t matter! So once again, we have our Republican colleagues trying to scare everybody…”
At this point, Barton Interrupted, “with the gentleman yield?”
“No, I will not yield to this monkey court or whatever it is!”
“This is not a monkey court!”
“Call it whatever you want, I’m not yielding! I am trying to tell you, that the problem here is that preexisting conditions don’t matter, HIPPA doesn’t apply, there is no health information in the process, your asked about your address, your date of birth, you’re not asked health information. So are we going down this path? Because you’re trying to scare people so they don’t apply, and so therefore the legislation gets delayed, The Affordable Care Act gets defunded, or is repealed. That’s all it is, hoping people want to apply. The fact of the matter is, there are millions of people out there, over 20 million, that are going on this site and they are going to apply, and they are ultimately going to be able to enroll. I think my Republican colleagues forget that a lot of people are enrolling through to state exchanges rather than the federal exchange, and if it wasn’t for the fact that had many Republican governors, including my own, agreed to set up state exchanges, then we wouldn’t be putting so much burden on the federal system.”
After listing off the many Americans that were able to successfully enroll through the several state exchanges, he continued, “so you know, this federal website is not the only way that you can apply. You can go to your community health center, you can go to the 1- 800 number, there are many ways for people to enroll and all we do here is talk about the website because you’re trying to make the case that people should not enroll!”
It’s refreshing to see a Democrat call out Republicans right on the spot and reveal the true intentions behind their distortions.
Please watch the video of the exchange below and share this and other related articles on social media forms so that everyone will know the truth about the Affordable Care Act, not Republican lies.
