If you want to know who is truly responsible for the government shutdown, this video is all you need. Unbeknownst to the American People, just hours before the government shutdown on September 30, 2013, the House Rules Committee Republicans sneakily changed the Rules of the House of Representatives so that the only Representative that can bring up the Senate’s clean CR for a vote (to reopen the government) is Majority Leader Eric Cantor or his designee — all but guaranteeing that the government would shut down a few hours later and remain shut down until Tea Party House Republicans decide to end their hostage-taking of the American economy and middle-class.
Apparently, they hoped the American people wouldn’t notice. Luckily, Democratic Rep. from Maryland Chris Van Hollen took to the House Floor this week and exposed this cynical Republican ruse for every American to see.
Before this ridiculous change in the law, any member of the House of Republicans, Democrat or Republican, would have had the right to bring the clean Senate bill up for a vote. As this brave Democrat made it clear, “Democracy has been suspended” in the House of Representatives by the intransigent and corrupt Republican Representatives.
After revealing their shameless rule change, he asks the Republican Speaker to confirm that the Tea Party Republicans “changed the standing rules of the house” at the last minute in order to ensure that only Eric Cantor or one of his Republican partners in crime can reopen the government, the Republican Speaker confirmed that is case.
Rep. Van Hollen’s parting words? “Democracy has been suspended!”
Unfortunately for the American people and republic, he couldn’t be more right.
Please watch the video below and spread the Republican Party’s shame.
