Republican Congressman: My Parents Died Because Planned Parenthood Receives Funding

Some conservatives enjoy making the “argument” that Planned Parenthood murders babies, chops them up, and sells the body parts in some sort of a crazy, illegal profit-making scheme. While the rest of us realize this is crazy, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) has taken the insane arguments against Planned Parenthood to a new extreme: the $500 million a year the organization receives from the federal government took money away from cancer research, leading to the deaths of his parents.

Yes, Planned Parenthood murdered Chaffetz’s parents.

At a taxpayer dollar-wasting hearing inspired the the fraudulent, heavily-edited Planned Parenthood smear videos, Chaffetz opened by throwing on his best sad face, tossing out some crocodile tears, and seriously blaming a health organization for his parents’ deaths.

“Cancer in this country kills about 1,500 people a day — a day,” the chairman noted. “And yet, our federal government only spends $5 billion to fight it. If they were shooting 1,500 people a day, if there were rockets coming in, we would be fighting this with everything we’ve got.”

“We don’t spend enough on cancer,” he said, adding that he would “quadruple” the amount of money spent on cancer. “And the reason I’m passionate about the hearing today is we’ve got a lot of health care providers who in their hearts know they are trying to provide good.”

“But the question before us is does this organization, does Planned Parenthood really need federal subsidy? Does it need federal dollars? Every time we spend a federal dollar, what we’re doing is we’re pulling money out of somebody’s pocket and we’re giving it to somebody else.”

Chaffetz said that he doesn’t want to “become numb to wasting those taxpayer dollars” on Planned Parenthood, when the money could have saved the life of his mother, who died of breast cancer. Interestingly, and probably embarrassingly for Chaffetz, who tried so hard to concoct a heart-wrenching narrative, much of what Planned Parenthood does is provide cancer screenings.

85 to 90 percent of the services provided by Planned Parenthood fall into the category of preventative care, including breast exams (though patients are referred to clinics for actual mammograms). In 2013, Planned Parenthood offered nearly 500,000 breast exams or breast care services, the former of which could have probably been useful to someone like Chaffetz’s mother — especially to a low-income individual who depends on the services Planned Parenthood provides. The type of cancer his father died of was unspecified.

Nevertheless, mom and dad are dead, cancer research is underfunded (few will argue with him there, but Chaffetz offers no evidence that Planned Parenthood funding, which represents a fraction of cancer research funding, take money away from the latter), and Planned Parenthood is quickly becoming the new Benghazi. “And as best I can tell — we’re going to have a hearing here — this is an organization that doesn’t need federal subsidy,” Chaffetz concluded.
